How and When Floating Poetry Came to Be

I use the phrase Floating Poetry to express the feelings and sensations that some unique songs are able to convey.

To me, a song is a "Flying Poem", so from that simple idea, that of a poem gliding on air, literally "floating", the concept "Floating Poetry" came to be.

There is a nice story behind the fact of how and when to me songs turned into "Flying Poems".

A long time ago, on the early days of September 1977, while waiting for the start of my senior year in High School, I had a lot of spare time to get to know my new surroundings (basically how to get used to the english language on a 24 hour basis), down at Vernon, Connecticut.

I watched TV in the mornings, mostly game shows and reruns. In the afternooms I read some magazines.

After a few days, I run out of magazines, so I turned to the collection of available music records.

Everything went fairly smoothe until I bumped into the flashy cover of an rather peculiar album by one Mr Stevie Wonder.

From the very first moment, I got mesmerized by Stevie’s quirky ways with lyrics and his infinite perspectives to portray human love with words.

From that moment on, I would continuously listen to this album and read the lyrics once and again. The only thing that forced me to part ways with this album was the start of classes.

It was this amazing album that introduced me to art of this genius, Mr Stevland Morris AKA Stevie Wonder.

This album is unique in many diverse dimensions, but lyrics get the lion’s share by a large margin.

The most frequent and powerful theme addressed by Stevie’s lyrics in this album is love.

Most people picture Isn’t She Lovely when they think of this record.

That is a beautiful song about fatherly love. BTW, this song includes Aisha Zakiya Morris’ first recording (she is the baby laughing).

Aisha happens to be Stevie’s eldest child, and a great female singer in her own right.

But it would be another song that put a spell on my heart forever, a song that would change my understanding of love between a man and a woman.

It is kind of paradoxical the fact that the title of the song is as short as it gets, but nonetheless the lyrics are so powerful.

The name of the song is "As", and these are the lyrics:

As around the sun the earth knows shes revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early may
Just as hate knows loves the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That Ill be loving you always

As now cant reveal the mistery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day
Just as all is born is new
Do you know what I say is true
That Ill be loving you always

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Always
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Always
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Always
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

Did you know that true love asks for nothing
Her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day

Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That Ill be loving you always

As today I know Im living but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustnt fear
For Ill know deep in my mind
The love of me Ive left behind
Cause Ill be loving you always

Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Always
Until the trees and sea just up and fly away
Always
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
Always
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Did you know youre loved by somebody?
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Always
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Ill loving you forever
Until dear mother nature says her work is through
Always
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Al~~~~~wa~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~aa~~~
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
~~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~aa~~~
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
~~~aa~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~ys

We all know sometimes lifes hates and troubles
Can make you wish you were born in another time and space
But you can bet your life times that and twice its double
That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed
So make sure when you say youre in it but not of it
Youre not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called hell
Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love
And maybe our childrens grandchildren
And their great-great grandchildren will tell

Ill be loving you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Loving you
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Loving you
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Loving you
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Be loving you
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Loving you
Until the trees and seas up, up and fly away
Loving you
Until the day that 8x8x8x8 is 4
Loving you
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Loving you
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Be loving you
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Loving you
Until dear mother nature says her work is through
Loving you
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Now aint that loving you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Aint that loving you
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
And Ive got to say always
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Al~~~~~~~~~wa~~~~~~~~~~~~ays
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Um al~~~~~~~~~wa~~~~~~~~~~~~ays
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Al~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~wa~~~~~~~~~ays
Until the trees and sea just up and fly away
Al~~~~~wa~~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~~~~aa
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Aa~~~~~~~~~~~~aa~~~~aa~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ays
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Al~~~~~~~~wa~~~~~~a~~~~~~~~~~~~aa
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
~~~~~~aa~~~~~~~~aa~~~~~~aa~~~~~~ays
Until dear mother nature says her work is through
Al~~~~ways
Until the day that you are me and I am you

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Until the trees and sea just up and fly away
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Until dear mother nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you

It’s incredible how this funky jazz shakes me in such a strong way.

Stevie’s convoluted use of the english language in this song gets me into a roller-coaster ride through the mysteries of love.

Some Floating Poetry from EWF

Pure Gold, by Earth Wind & Fire

Well, this a really special song, that has captured my heart, my soul and my entire body from the very first time I heard it.

For some magical reason, unbeknownst to me, my youngest daughter likes it too (let me say, she likes it a lot!).

For those that like to have a reference of the album where to find this song, here is such reference:

For further reference, you may check it out at AOL Sessions, right up here:

This song is about realizing that in this world of today, where everything is NOW, we have lost perspective. The only thing that seems to matter is HAVING, instead of BEING: you can pretend to BE anything, as long as you HAVE the means to support that pretention, the ways to disguise yourself as what you would like to BE.

But if all that supports what you pretend to BE, if those means were no longer available to you for any reason ("Riches come and go…"), you would no longer be able to BE that what you pretended to BE.

This song says that your BEING is defined by what you LOVE, and how much you are capable of LOVING: ONLY LOVE IS PURE GOLD.

I could never agree more with my daughter that this song is special, really special.

But for those that really enjoy the "Floating Poetry" in its true dimension, let’s get down to business, ladies & gentlemen, the lyrics:

Walk in the Light
That shines so bright
Let your soul feel right
Love is pure gold, yeah

Won’t you wake up, wake up walk in the Light
Won’t you wake up, wake up bring substance in your life
Won’t you wake up, wake up walk in the light
Won’t you wake up, wake up, yeah
Where’s your heart, where’s your pride
Has it all been pushed aside
Life is dreams living high
Yet no substance in your life
It’s a hard world, I know
But don’t give into the lies
You have always been a star
Everything you need’s inside … your heart

Oooh, you’re life is special, really special, yeah
Your flesh just burns in your soul
Truth and lie were pleasure, they were pleasure
Riches come and go
Only Love is pure gold

Many hearts, many lives have been touched when you realize
That you are worthy, you’re the prize
But you have to heal inside
It’s a hard world, I know
But don’t give in to the lies
You have always been a star
Everything you need’s inside

(Say ‘ya) always on the ground (but cha), need some peace of mind (won’t cha)
Slow down, take your time, there’s a million ways to shine, yeah (when ‘ya)
Let the whirly thing (got cha) control your destiny
(‘Ya gotta) break or make a change (and then you’ll find your stars will align)

Oooh, you’re life is special, really special, yeah
Your flesh just burns in your soul
Truth and lie were pleasure, they were pleasure
Riches come and go
Only Love is pure gold

Won’t you wake up, wake up walk in the Light
Won’t you wake up, wake up bring substance in your life
Won’t you wake up, wake up walk in the light
Won’t you wake up, wake up, yeah

Oooh, you’re life is special, really special, yeah
Your flesh just burns in your soul
Truth and lie were pleasure, they were pleasure
Riches come and go
Only Love is pure gold

Hey, your love will help you find your treasure, have mercy… yeah
As you live from day to day
‘Cause only true love makes things better… yeah
‘Cause true love never fades away

I Like The Way You Move, by Earth Wind & Fire with Kenny G.

Well, this is a cute song, let me tell ya.

It is a superb cover from an original song by OutKast.

IMHO, the best part of the song goes to Kenny G. and the sound of that beauty of a soprano sax he plays. EWF did the best by giving the best shot to Kenny and just playing "second fiddle" in the background with a chorus (a perfect match to Kenny G’s sax!).

Being true to nature that the sax is the musical instrument that most closely resembles the tones of the human voice, Kenny G’s main part of this piece is really "a song".

If you have that special someone (to me, that special lady) for whom this song is intended to in your heart and your mind, well, you will concur with me that this song is truely Floating Poetry in your soul.

This goes out for anyone that vibrates to the rythm of the movements of her/his special someone, just like I do when I contemplate the movements of my special someone.

When I think of her beautiful grace on display just by her mere walk, I can say with Shakira that "hips don’t lie".

If you want to check this song out, try it here and enjoy (sorry, Kenny G does not play the sax in this live session!):

The Look of Love

Once again, an incredibly beautiful song by Hal David & Burt Bacharach, The Look of Love

The look of love is in your eyes
A look your smile can’t disguise

The look of love is saying so much more than just words could ever say

And what my heart has heard, well it takes my breath away

I can hardly wait to hold you, feel my arms around you

How long I have waited

Waited just to love you, now that I have found you

You’ve got the Look of love, it’s on your face

A look that time can’t erase

Be mine tonight, let this be just the start of so many nights like this

Let’s take a lovers vow and then seal it with a kiss

I can hardly wait to hold you, feel my arms around you

How long I have waited

Waited just to love you, now that I have found you

Don’t ever go

Don’t ever go

I love you so

(Thanks Herb, Thanks Hal, Thanks Burt, Thanks Captain & Tenille, Thanks Diana!)

Ready to Take a Chance Again de Barry Manilow

You remind me I live in a shell
Safe from the past,
I’m doin’ okay but not very well.
No jolts, no surprises, no crisis arises
My life goes along as it should
It’s all very nice, but not very good.
And I’m ready to take a chance again
Ready to put my love on the line with you
Been livin’ with nothing to show for it
You get what you get when you go for it
And I’m ready to take a chance again with you

When she left me, in all my despair
I just held on, my hopes were all gone
Then I found you there

And I’m ready to take a chance again
Ready to put my love on the line with you
Been livin’ with nothing to show for it
You get what you get when you go for it
And I’m ready to take a chance again with you

And I’m ready to take a chance again
Ready to put my love on the line with you
Been livin’ with nothing to show for it
You get what you get when you go for it
And I’m ready to take a chance again with you

And I’m ready to take a chance again
Ready to take a chance again with you

With you

“Close to You” & “We’ve Only Just Begun”

These two songs are simply sublime.

Let the lyrics talk for themselves:

Close to You

 Why do birds Suddenly appear?

Everytime you are near

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

Why do stars

Fall down from the sky?

Everytime you walk by

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

On the day that you were born

The angels got together and decided

To create a dream come true

So they sprinkled moondust in your hair

Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the boys in town

Follow you all around

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

We’ve Only Just Begun

We’ve only just begun to live

White lace and promises

A kiss for luck and we’re on our way

We’ve only begun

Before the rising sun we fly

So many roads to choose

We start our walking

And learn to run

And yes! We’ve just begun

Sharin’ horizons that are new to us

Watchin’ the signs along the way

Talkin’ it over just the two of us

Workin’ together day to day, together

And when the evening comes we smile

So much of life ahead

We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow

And yes! We’ve just begun

Sharin’ horizons that are new to us

Watchin’ the signs along the way

Talkin’ it over just the two of us

Workin’ together day to day, together, together

And when the evening comes we smile

So much of life ahead

We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow

And yes! We’ve just begun

But why do I mention these songs together?

Well, let’s just say that this entry could also be called "How Karen & Richard changed music with Herb & Jerry, Burt & Hal, and Paul & Roger".

To me, each one of these poem-songs does not exist just by itself, but as the magical incarnation played by Karen and Richard Carpenter.

In my mind, I cannot distill the lyrics from Karen’s celestial voice or from Richard’s wonderful arrangements.

The songs and Karen and Richard’s interpretation form a unit, a tight unit indeed.

There is a cute little story behind how all this came to be.

In 1969, Karen and Richard were just a couple of would-be musicians, hoping for the change to be "discovered".

That change occured when a demo tape of the brothers bumped into Herb Alpert’s office, one of the owner-managers of the famous record label A&M (The founders of A&M were Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, thus the name of the label).

The choice of songs in the tape was not very addecuate, but Herb "saw" much beyond that small inconvenience: thank God Herb was no Simon Cowell!

In no time at all, Herb and Jerry offered Karen and Richard a contract, which had to be co-signed by their parents too, because Karen, being 19 years old at the time, was under-age.

At the time, A&M had also under contract an incredible cast of singers, groups and composers.

Among the greater composers under their tenure, there were two pairs of composer/songwriter that were just remarcable: Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and Paul Williams and Roger Nichols.

They produced songs that seem like they were meant to be sung by Karen’s unique voice.

All this happened thanks to the collaborative work of these four pairs of amazing talents: Herb & Jerry, Karen & Richard, Paul & Roger, and Burt & Hal.

But the original compositions were not really meant for Karen & Richard.

In fact, Paul and Roger wrote "We’ve Only Just Begun" for a TV Ad for a bank.

That is why that song is so short!

A Silvio

In the entries of this category I want to share the lyrics of those songs that move me

Where do I start?
What song?, what author?
The choice of author was easy: Silvio Rodriguez Dominguez, but the song?
Hard to choose, so many beautiful, moving songs. Of all those amazing songs, one that really shakes me is Quien Fuera.
This poem tells the story of a heart in love, prisoner of its own painful passions, singing to the source of its light and darkness, the object of that love.
Besides being a gem, this poem also relates to a little part of Silvio’s and Cuba’s history.
In the 1960s, Silvio went to jail for daring to sing songs from the Beatles, a clear symbol of capitalism.
Only by the end of the 1980s did the Cuban government change its policy towards the Beatles, allowing Cubans in Cuba to listen to their music.
One of the mentors and sponsor of such change was Silvio.
Quien Fuera is the song where Silvio symbolically breaks the chains on this subject, by openly mentioning
John and Paul, a long awaited retribution for that adolescent rebellion that cost him doing time.
Also, here goes my recognition to that polychromatic woman that brought so many wonderful colors to my life, a long time ago.
One of such palettes the she gave me is Silvio.
PS: To those English-speaking readers, my apologies for not translating Silvio’s lyrics. Silvio is a poet that sings, like Vinicius de Moraes or Chico Buarque.
I dare not blemish his poetry. Silvio is Cuban and his art "is" in Spanish, both lyrics and notes.

Quien Fuera

Estoy buscando una palabra
en el umbral de tu misterio.
Quien fuera Ali Baba?
Quien fuera el mítico Simbad?
Quien fuera un poderoso sortilegio?
Quien fuera encantador?

Estoy buscando una escafandra,
al pie del mar de los delirios.
Quien fuera Jaques Cousteau?
Quien fuera Nemo, el capitán?
Quien fuera el batiscafo de tu abismo?
Quien fuera explorador?

Corazón oscuro,
corazón con muros,
corazón que se esconde,
corazón que esta donde,
corazón en fuga,
herido de dudas
de amor.

Estoy buscando melodía
Para tener como llamarte.
Quien fuera ruiseñor?
Quien fuera Lennon y Mc Cartney.
Sindo Garay, Violeta, Chico Buarque?
Quien fuera tu trovador?

Corazón oscuro,
corazón con muros,
corazón que se esconde,
corazón que esta donde,
corazón en fuga,
herido de dudas
de amor.
